Do you want some more Raspberry Pi?

February 16th, 2013 No comments

In case you were one of the many new folks that attended (or missed) last week’s Raspberry Pi presentation and did not see the the follow-up post on our (GoogleGroup MailingList) or are just hungry for more, come back to HIVE13 again this coming Tuesday night (Feb. 19) for another slice of Raspberry Pi.

In the one hour (6:30pm to 7:30pm) before the usual HIVE business meeting, we will have an informal follow-up on the Raspberry Pi.  Think of it as a “Birds-of-a-Feather”, or a “Special Interest Group” gathering where folks with a shared interest can compare and contrast experiences and get energized to to press on with their individual or collaborative learning efforts.  It might even become a regular weekly event.

OK, so here’s a challenge.  The HIVE would like to show three Raspberry Pi projects at the October Maker Faire.  If the magnificent glass block display can be made portable for the day and counts as one project, what will be the other two?  How about one dirt-simple project and one that is a bit more complex?  Bring your ideas and energy for the discussion.  We’ll launch a project page for the ideas that grow legs.  You learn by doing and gaining experience.  Sure you can do it all yourself in your basement, but it is better at the HIVE.  We even have pizza to go with that pie!

Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013 at HIVE13 – Easy as Raspberry Pi a la mode!

January 20th, 2013 No comments

The Raspberry Pi is an amazingly capable $39 credit-card sized computer.  In the time since it first went on sale last February, hardware hackers have turned this little guy into everything from a game console to a mini Linux laptop to a supercomputer.  Sales have also skyrocketed, with an estimated one million PC hobbyists snatching one up.

Join us at the HIVE on Feb. 12, 2013 when member Chris Hodapp will be the featured 2nd Tuesday speaker at the 7:30pm business meeting.  He will share his experiences using a Raspberry Pi to upgrade  the latest version of the HIVE’s glass block LED matrix display.  Other Pi-makers will also be present.  It will be an informal, informative Q&A session you can use as you consider to start your own Raspberry Pi project.

Members, guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to see and learn a new maker skill.  The HIVE is the place to be a maker and work on sweet collaborative projects.  (Find Us)

January 2nd Tuesday – Connecting with Area Entrepreneurial Opportunities

December 31st, 2012 No comments

Get an update on the hot entrepreneurial initiatives in the Cincinnati area from Venture for America fellow, Roanne Lee, the 2nd Tuesday guest speaker at HIVE13 this coming January 8th, 2013 starting at 7:30pm.

Roanne is part of the core team at business-backed Cintrifuse, the regional innovation effort and startup accelerator located in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district.  It has three components: the Cintrifuse Hub, Cintrifuse Access and the Cintrifuse Fund. The Hub is the accelerator space.  The Access is for mentors, instructors, and established institutions.  The Fund is, well, a venture capital operation with commitments of more than $50 million in investments to launch the group’s first fund of funds.

Roanne and several HIVE members recently participated in the separate Startup Weekend held at the NKY METS Center over the Nov. 9-11 weekend.  Active and empowered entrepreneurs experienced the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures in workshops where they pitched  ideas and formed teams to start companies.

She will be joined by other members of the Cintrifuse Team and Venture for America Fellows.

Looking for a new job opportunity?  You always wanted to start your own company?  Here is your chance to become aware, learn, and begin to connect with others who are engaged in entrepreneurial opportunities in the Cincinnati area.

Members,  guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to hear Roanne’s talk and the follow-up discussion.  First timers come early to meet and greet.  The meeting will start promptly at 7:30pm.  The HIVE is the place to be a maker and be connected with area goings-ons.   It is all about awareness and opportunity.  (Find Us)

November 13th, 2012 No comments

Combatant’s Keep  is an entertaining, educational re-enactment group dedicated to fill the void between entertainment and education without sacrificing the pageantry, drama, and spectacle that are synonymous with the Middle Ages.

Join us at the HIVE for the 2nd Tuesday program this coming December 11th, starting at 7:30pm.

Living history enthusiasts Barry Kimball, Ryan Hittinger, and maybe Casey McCarthy will bring their hardware and talk about their historically accurate re-creations of live jousts from the 15th century and reinactments from other time periods.

2nd Tuesday in November – Lean Patent Protection for the Start-Up

November 9th, 2012 No comments

Congratulations, you’ve designed a better mousetrap!  Now how do you protect your new Intellectual Property as your start-up company takes your new product to the market?

Join us at the HIVE on Nov. 13, starting at 7:30pm, when local IP lawyer, Vance VanDrake of Ulmer & Berne LLP, will be the featured guest speaker at  our November 2nd Tuesday program.  Guests and first-time visitors are welcome to attend!

There has been a lot of (well deserved) attention given to the “lean start-up” model for early stage businesses.  This model encourages start-up companies to create a minimum viable product (MVP); then iterate as the technology develops and customer feedback is received.  At its core, this model recognizes the risks of trying to guess what the customer wants and where the technology will head.

Vance will present his “lean” patent model that emerging businesses should consider.  This patent strategy  introduces the Minimum Viable Patent (MVP), which mirrors the lean start-up model and shares the same benefits of flexibility, low initial cost, and optimization.

Urban Survival: Zombie Outbreak Cincinnati

September 25th, 2012 2 comments

Is it better to be unprepared for the expected, or prepared for the unexpected? As cities around the world brace for the end of times, perhaps they should just be making plans. Urban survival is as much about knowing your terrain as it is knowing your enemy. Where will you run when hordes of the undead attack? How will you communicate when smart phones become as dead as your antagonist? More importantly, what IS Cincinnati chili made of exactly, and is it enough to help sustain life?

All of these questions and more will be address in Urban Survival: Zombie Outbreak Cincinnati, where we explore the design of a city with extreme prejudice.

When: Oct. 9th 7:30pm

Where: Hive13 (2929 SpringGrove Ave)

Speaker: Giacomo Ciminello
