July 2nd, 2013 No comments
Glitch in the Marix

This Friday July 5th at 2600 we will demonstrate how to preform hardware glitching attacks.  Glitching attacks have become very popular in the game console and mobile phone scene.  We will discuss clock and power glitching concepts and demonstrate clock glitching attacks on some ExploitMe sketches designed for arduino boards.

This is a standard 2600 meeting: First Friday of the month starting at 7pm.  This event is open to the public.

Tuesday May 14, 2013 at Hive13 – DIY CSI Forensics

April 28th, 2013 16 comments

Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, May 14, at the 7:30 pm meeting for an informative look into Do-It-Yourself Crime-Scene-Investigation Forensics.

Member Brian Cochran (who is a Detective in the Boone County Sheriff’s Department assigned to crime scene investigation) will use material from the 40-hour course he teaches at the University of Tennessee’s National Forensic Academy.  Brian will perform live demonstrations of some of the coolest latent print development techniques; making finger prints appear on paper,  making them glow, and fun stuff like that.  The presentation will include a brief overview with slides showing real CSI jobs and case studies.  The case studies focus on the processes that are used and where the “maker” attitude was applied to bring the case to a successful conclusion.  The two case studies that will be presented are homicides.  Real crime scene photography and a limited number of postmortem examination photos will be shown.  It will not be anything different from what you would see on an episode of CSI or Dexter but these ARE real.  Both of these case study presentations have been shown to high school groups before, but this is an UP FRONT WARNING for those inclined to be squeamish.

Members, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and those interested in law enforcement and criminal investigations are welcome to come to hear this presentation.  Come to learn about this different kind of  (“making” the case) skill.  (Find Us)

March 26th, 2013 15 comments

What would be the ultimate HACK?  How about the human brain?  Can you really think faster using a few simple components and a 9v battery?  Want to learn what others are doing?  Want to try it (on) yourself?

Learn about the approaches to lifehack your way to better mental and physical performance.  Neuro equipment can be built by hackers on a reasonable budget to do everything from brain imaging to changing actual neuronal functioning.

Join us at HIVE13 this Tuesday, March 26, at the 7:30 pm meeting for a stimulating intellectual enlightenment.

Did you meet that interesting guy, Judas (JohnM) that has been hanging out at the HIVE this past month?  Did you know he was  on sabbatical from that other hackerspace out of San Francisco called NoiseBridge?  Did you wonder what kind of circuit boards he’s been making during his time here?  Well, he’s going to give us a special show-and-tell before he leaves us to go back home.

Members, guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to hear him pontificate on personal human performance enhancement and neuro hacking.  Come to learn this new left coast hacking skill.  It could be a mind-blowing phrenological experience.  (Find Us)

Tuesday Mar. 12, 2013 at HIVE13 – Easy Bake Surface Mount Soldering!

February 25th, 2013 2 comments

OK, so you’ve gotten a taste for Raspberry Pi at HIVE13.  Now what?  Well, anybody can buy a pie.  HIVE13 is all about making things.  So how about learning how to bake your own flavor of custom circuit board pie, from scratch?

Join us at the HIVE on March 12, 2013 when member and CTO DaveB will be the featured 2nd Tuesday speaker at the 7:30pm meeting.  His talk/class will be about the process of designing and making your own small-scale batch of custom printed circuit boards and focus on hands-on demonstrations of surface mount PCB assembly techniques.  If you’ve ever wanted to work with surface mount electronics but didn’t know how, this is your chance to learn.

The class will start with an introduction to SMT hand-soldering technique aimed at beginners.  Next will be a demonstration of how to use the makerbot and laser cutter available at the space to create a solder paste stencil and simple frame.  These will be used to prep boards with solder paste and components followed finally by a demo of reflow soldering using the DIY reflow oven recently completed by DaveB.  If you’re interested in having a board of your own to try to put together, there will be an extremely limited number of kits (probably FTDI USB->TTL converters) available for purchase on a first-come first-serve basis.

Members, guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to see and learn a new maker skill.  The HIVE is the place to be a maker and work on sweet collaborative projects.  (Find Us)

Tuesday Feb. 12, 2013 at HIVE13 – Easy as Raspberry Pi a la mode!

January 20th, 2013 2 comments

The Raspberry Pi is an amazingly capable $39 credit-card sized computer.  In the time since it first went on sale last February, hardware hackers have turned this little guy into everything from a game console to a mini Linux laptop to a supercomputer.  Sales have also skyrocketed, with an estimated one million PC hobbyists snatching one up.

Join us at the HIVE on Feb. 12, 2013 when member Chris Hodapp will be the featured 2nd Tuesday speaker at the 7:30pm business meeting.  He will share his experiences using a Raspberry Pi to upgrade  the latest version of the HIVE’s glass block LED matrix display.  Other Pi-makers will also be present.  It will be an informal, informative Q&A session you can use as you consider to start your own Raspberry Pi project.

Members, guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to see and learn a new maker skill.  The HIVE is the place to be a maker and work on sweet collaborative projects.  (Find Us)

January 2nd Tuesday – Connecting with Area Entrepreneurial Opportunities

December 31st, 2012 No comments

Get an update on the hot entrepreneurial initiatives in the Cincinnati area from Venture for America fellow, Roanne Lee, the 2nd Tuesday guest speaker at HIVE13 this coming January 8th, 2013 starting at 7:30pm.

Roanne is part of the core team at business-backed Cintrifuse, the regional innovation effort and startup accelerator located in Cincinnati’s Over-the-Rhine district.  It has three components: the Cintrifuse Hub, Cintrifuse Access and the Cintrifuse Fund. The Hub is the accelerator space.  The Access is for mentors, instructors, and established institutions.  The Fund is, well, a venture capital operation with commitments of more than $50 million in investments to launch the group’s first fund of funds.

Roanne and several HIVE members recently participated in the separate Startup Weekend held at the NKY METS Center over the Nov. 9-11 weekend.  Active and empowered entrepreneurs experienced the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures in workshops where they pitched  ideas and formed teams to start companies.

She will be joined by other members of the Cintrifuse Team and Venture for America Fellows.

Looking for a new job opportunity?  You always wanted to start your own company?  Here is your chance to become aware, learn, and begin to connect with others who are engaged in entrepreneurial opportunities in the Cincinnati area.

Members,  guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to hear Roanne’s talk and the follow-up discussion.  First timers come early to meet and greet.  The meeting will start promptly at 7:30pm.  The HIVE is the place to be a maker and be connected with area goings-ons.   It is all about awareness and opportunity.  (Find Us)
