Android Dev 101 Sold Out

December 5th, 2010 No comments

Android Development 101 class has been sold out.  I’ve had some requests to be put on a backup list if anybody drops out of class.  Eventbrite will probably show an opening if somebody drops out but we are currently NOT doing an official wait list.  We are however going to have another android development class sometime early 2011 for those who can not attend this class.  We know the class size is small but we feel that this is a good thing…we just need to have more classes :)

For those who are going to be attending this class, emails will go out as we get closer the the date of the class.  Teaser:  You will be making an app that you can use while drunk to assist in drunk txting your friends … hehe

New Membership Tiers!

November 24th, 2010 No comments

New Membership TiersAt the Hive we are really excited to announce new membership tiers!  We are now offering $50 a month for FULL membership to new members.  This is the same level of access as our old $100 tier, which gives you a door code, 24/7 access to the space, lockers, discounts on classes and the admiration of your peers!

We are having a membership drive to get 15 new members.  This number is important because with 15 new members we can ensure that the overall membership to the space can be lowered to $50/mo for good and still pay our rent!  There is also a little red meter under the subscribe  button on the main page so everybody can follow along on the progress of the drive.

To become a full member goto the main page at www.hive13.org and click “Subscribe” on the right hand side.

A little lower down the the sidebar is another new tier called the Elite tier.  This is a donation tier.  If you can’t make it to the Hive but you still want to support us, then this is the tier for you!  Members will also get discounts on upcoming classes at the hive!  If you are a full time student then you can sign up for the Elite tier, fill out the student application (still to come) and you can be a full member as well!

Please spread this message around.  We need to make this membership drive a success!

Mitch Altman and Jimmie Rodgers Coming To Hive13

August 9th, 2010 No comments

Mitch at Noisebridge

Mitch Altman and Jimmie P. Rodgers are coming to Cincinnati and HIVE13 this August 17 and 18. We are thrilled to announce that we’ll be hosting one of their famous “learn to solder” workshops!

They will be the featured guest speakers at our regularly scheduled meeting at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 17 and their solder workshop is at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, August 18. Both events are at Cincinnati’s Hive13 at 2929 Spring Grove Ave.

Register for the soldering class at the eventbrite page: http://mitchhive13.eventbrite.com/

Best of all, the meeting and workshop are FREE! You just pay the cost of any workshop materials, $10-30 depending on which kit you choose! Mitch and Jimmie have taught thousands of people to solder and make cool things at their workshops all around the world. They can teach you, too!

If you have ever had any curiosity about making something with electronics, then please join us. Anyone and everyone can learn to make cool things. It’s fun and easy! You can learn to make something and take it home with you!

There will be plenty of cool kits available to build, including:
* TV-B-Gone (turn off TVs in public places!)
* Brain Machine (Meditate, Hallucinate, and Trip Out!)
* LEDcube (cool cube of blinky lights!)
* Mignonette Game (play fun games!)
* Trippy RGB Waves (interactive colored blinky lights!)
* MiniPOV (more cool blinky lights!)
* MintyBoost (charge your USB enabled gadgets!)

And for the more advanced:
* Microcontroller programmers (program all your AVR family chips!), Arduino clones (make just about anything!), and more.

Mitch Altman is the San Francisco-based hacker and inventor, best known for co-founding 3ware, his pioneering work in Virtual Reality at VPL Research and inventing TV-B-Gone. He is also President and CTO of Cornfield Electronics. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Altman

Jimmie Rodgers is a full time hacker, maker and circuit bender, from the Boston area. He designs open source hardware kits, teaches a variety of workshops, and gives talks on related topics that
interest. He currently sells three kits. The Open Heart v2.0 is a LED array that you can easily create animations for. The Atari Punk Console is a simple and fun sound generator. The LoL Shield is an
Arduino shield with lots of LEDs on it. Check out the kits section for more information. http://jimmieprodgers.com/

UPDATE: If you can bring your own tools that would be very helpful since Hive13 can only provide so many. Participants will need a soldering iron, a wire snippers, a wire stripper, some solder and a helping hands. Hive13 will have a few of each of those, but the more people that bring their own means the fewer people that have to share tools. The class is free but if you’d like to make a donation we would appreciate it. We would like to be able to invest in a few more tools so we can have workshops like this again and again.

Lockpicking Friday, June 18th @ 7pm

June 15th, 2010 5 comments

We are getting together again with Sam for more lock picking.  It will be the same format as last time, a short presentation on a lockpick technique followed by hanging out and picking locks and ending with a competition of some sort.

If you missed last month, have no fear, someone can bring you up to speed.  So, grab your picks and locks and come hang out.  If you don’t have your own picks, there will be plenty present and we can show you how to make some picks of your own.

Lockpicking Friday, May 21st @ 7p

May 19th, 2010 2 comments

Sam the Lockpick Guy and I will be hanging out at Hive13 on the 21st, picking locks and stuff.  Well, Sam will be picking, I will mostly be swearing.  This is the first of what will hopefully become a regular meeting of local lockpickers.

When we have enough people meeting regularly, we can apply to become a local chapter of The Open Organization Of Lockpickers (TOOOL), but on Friday we will be mostly hanging out, meeting other lockpickers, and picking locks.

So grab your picks and locks and come join us for an evening of locksport :-)

If you don’t have locks or picks, have no fear, there will be plenty there, plus a tutorial on making your own pick from a hairpin.

You can also check out the wiki page for more details and links to info about TOOOL:
