When it comes time to explore the innerworkings of the mechanism, it is only the slightest of touches and the most deft moves that will guide you.”
As a special honor we will have Schuyler Towne of Open Locksport fame kick off our first Locksport workshop! At The Next HOPE conference in NYC, NY in 2010, Towne won the Locksport Wizard contest. He also had the now famous kickstarter project when trying to raise $6,000 to create a set of custom open lockpicks he ended up raising over $87,000.

If you have a set of lockpicks you will need to bring them. There will be some to share. We will not have any lockpicks available for sale either.
Android Development 101 class has been sold out. I’ve had some requests to be put on a backup list if anybody drops out of class. Eventbrite will probably show an opening if somebody drops out but we are currently NOT doing an official wait list. We are however going to have another android development class sometime early 2011 for those who can not attend this class. We know the class size is small but we feel that this is a good thing…we just need to have more classes :)
For those who are going to be attending this class, emails will go out as we get closer the the date of the class. Teaser: You will be making an app that you can use while drunk to assist in drunk txting your friends … hehe

The OpenDoor Hackathon is a hackathon to benefit the members of hacker/maker/artist/co-working spaces by creating a standardized, Open Source access and membership management system that can be used by everyone. At the end of the hackathon, the systems (or subsystems) created by each space will be voted upon, and the best system (or combination of systems) will be chosen. Implementing the system afterward is, of course, optional.
Why are we doing this?
I know, the word “standardized” sends chills down my spine too, but I assure you that this is a good thing! Deciding upon a common system would enable the following things:
The ability to share membership between spaces
Crowd-sourced security enhancements and feature additions
Easier membership management
A warm fuzzy feeling of being connected with other spaces
What we’re envisioning (and what many of you already have) is a sort of Reciprocikey or Space Passport system. We believe that the only way to create such an awesome system is to work together on it!
When is the OpenDoor Hackathon?
The OpenDoor Hackathon will begin on Saturday, December 11th at 2pm PST, ending 24 hours later at 2pm PST on Sunday, December 12th.

The creative coding movement has existed for several years in the form of programming APIs such as openFrameworks, Processing, and Cinder. However, since the Xbox Kinect was released last month, there has been an explosion of activity in this arena.
Because ZombieCraig recently purchased an Kinect for the space, we have the chance to participate in this revolutionary movement. Dozens of digital artists are cutting their teeth in the creative coding movement, making a name for themselves in the intersection of art and technology.
Therefore, this is a call for projects. The Hive is a wonderful place for coders and artists to collaborate. We have a chance for coders to express themselves and artists to enter an emerging market. This is an especially great opportunity for art students, since our student membership fee is only $13.37.

At Hive13 we have a 5′ × 5′ glass block wall/window in our space and the first thing we thought of when we saw it was a 7 × 8 pixel grid.
We want to build a programmable full color, lo-res display using RGB LEDs.
To do this we obivously need LEDs – lots of LEDs. The brighter the better.
We could use these nice ShiftBrite modules, but we’d really rather go all out and get the ShiftBrite’s big brother – the MegaBrite.
ShiftBrites are about $3.50 each and MegaBrites are about $7.75 each. And we need 56 of them. We’ll also need some cabling to connect them all up. The cables are about $1.50 each too. Finally, we’ll need a a good power supply to power it all; that could be as much as $100.
So,
($3.50 + $1.50) * 56 = $280
($7.75 + $1.50) * 56 = $518
All told, we’re going to need somewhere between $300 – $700 to do this. We’re shooting for $400 here. If we go over and get to $700, awesome. If we only get to $300, we’ll make do. Any funds raised here, but not used, will go directly to the Hive13 general fund.
