Sorry for the late notice, but Cinci2600 is this Friday, Craig will be presenting on RetroShare, a circle-of-trust darknet file sharing application. If you have something that you would like to present, or a demo you would like to give, please feel free to come by.
We will be meeting at the Hive13 hacker space in Camp Washington, 2929 Spring Grove Ave at 7pm. Maps and other details about the location can be found here. See you there!
OK, so you’ve gotten a taste for Raspberry Pi at HIVE13. Now what? Well, anybody can buy a pie. HIVE13 is all about making things. So how about learning how to bake your own flavor of custom circuit board pie, from scratch?
Join us at the HIVE on March 12, 2013 when member and CTO DaveB will be the featured 2nd Tuesday speaker at the 7:30pm meeting. His talk/class will be about the process of designing and making your own small-scale batch of custom printed circuit boards and focus on hands-on demonstrations of surface mount PCB assembly techniques. If you’ve ever wanted to work with surface mount electronics but didn’t know how, this is your chance to learn.
The class will start with an introduction to SMT hand-soldering technique aimed at beginners. Next will be a demonstration of how to use the makerbot and laser cutter available at the space to create a solder paste stencil and simple frame. These will be used to prep boards with solder paste and components followed finally by a demo of reflow soldering using the DIY reflow oven recently completed by DaveB. If you’re interested in having a board of your own to try to put together, there will be an extremely limited number of kits (probably FTDI USB->TTL converters) available for purchase on a first-come first-serve basis.
Members, guests, and interested first-time-walk-ins are welcome to come to see and learn a new maker skill. The HIVE is the place to be a maker and work on sweet collaborative projects. (Find Us)
In case you were one of the many new folks that attended (or missed) last week’s Raspberry Pi presentation and did not see the the follow-up post on our (GoogleGroup MailingList) or are just hungry for more, come back to HIVE13 again this coming Tuesday night (Feb. 19) for another slice of Raspberry Pi.
In the one hour (6:30pm to 7:30pm) before the usual HIVE business meeting, we will have an informal follow-up on the Raspberry Pi. Think of it as a “Birds-of-a-Feather”, or a “Special Interest Group” gathering where folks with a shared interest can compare and contrast experiences and get energized to to press on with their individual or collaborative learning efforts. It might even become a regular weekly event.
OK, so here’s a challenge. The HIVE would like to show three Raspberry Pi projects at the October Maker Faire. If the magnificent glass block display can be made portable for the day and counts as one project, what will be the other two? How about one dirt-simple project and one that is a bit more complex? Bring your ideas and energy for the discussion. We’ll launch a project page for the ideas that grow legs. You learn by doing and gaining experience. Sure you can do it all yourself in your basement, but it is better at the HIVE. We even have pizza to go with that pie!
