This fall, HIVE13 is hosting a six-class series on crafting tie-dye, beaded jewelry, paper flower bouquets, decoupage picture frames, and domino tile magnets. Classes are presented by Rebecca Irwin, a local jewelry maker, workshop presenter, and wife of member Kevin. No experience required. All materials will be provided or specified in the specific class descriptions.

Tie-Dye – Bring Your Own T-shirt to Tie-Dye, Groovy Man!
Saturday, Sept. 15, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $5.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members

Bring your old t-shirts or other cotton item (apron, bag, socks and more) and transform them into beautiful tie-dye creations. No experience required, just bring yourself and your items to tie-dye and get ready to get messy. Please wear old or dark clothing. For ages five and up.

Jewelry I – Basic beading for earrings and pendant
Saturday, Sept. 22, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $10.00 for members, $15.00 for non-members

In Jewelry I you will be introduced to the basics of beading and supplies. We will create your own individual pair of earrings and a matching pendant. You will learn about the tools and supplies used in jewelry making and will gain the knowledge to be able to create jewelry on your own. No experience required. For ages 12 and up.

Jewelry II – Intermediate beading for necklaces and bracelets
Saturday, Oct. 6, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $10.00 for members, $15.00 for non-members

In Jewelry II you will be introduced to intermediate beading including beaded necklaces and bracelets. We will create your own individual necklace. You will learn about the tools and supplies used in jewelry making and will gain the knowledge to be able to create jewelry on your own. Jewelry I is a prerequisite. For ages 12 and up.

Paper Flower Bouquets – Fun and quick tissue paper creations!
Saturday, Oct. 20, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $5.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members

Relax and enjoy learning how to make these beautiful bouquets. A simple technique that is both fun and quick. Experiment with different shapes, and colors to create your own flower bouquet from tissue paper. No experience required. For ages 12 and up.

Domino Tile Magnets – You know someone whose refrigerator needs one!
Saturday, Nov. 17, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $5.00 for members, $10.00 for non-members

Learn a simple technique that will allow you to create amazing items out of old domino pieces. You will create three domino tile magnets using dominoes, magnets, paint, and scrapbook paper. No experience required. For ages 12 and up.

Decoupage Picture Frames – Re-Do, 2nd Chance!
Saturday, Dec. 1, 2-4 pm, at HIVE13 (go to registration)
Cost for class and materials is $10.00 for members, $15.00 for non-members

Come learn this simple technique that will make you crazy over decoupage. We will create one decoupage picture frame using paper and decoupage glue. No experience required. For ages 12 and up.  This class was originally scheduled on Nov. 3 but is now offered again on Dec. 1 as a Re-Do 2nd Chance!

Have you always wanted to get your Ham operators license? Well here is your chance!

On Saturday, January 14th, Hive13 hosting a HAM radio class to get your HAM license. This is an all day class plus the technical licensing test at the end. A week or two after passing your exam you will get your call sign from the FCC.

This class requires a study guide, The AARL Ham Radio License Manual, isbn# 0872590976. For the $30 signup the book is included. If you wish to purchase the book ahead of time then you can sign up for $15. You will need the book to take this class.

The free online version of the “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” course (http://www.ai-class.com/) based on Stanford CS221 starts next week. As several members signed up for this course, we are going to be meeting up at the Hive on a weekly basis to watch the lectures and work through some of the homework. We’ll meet first on Wednesday, October 12th, at 6:30 PM, and the intention is to keep meeting each Wednesday at the same time for the 10 weeks that the course lasts (course schedule is here – it runs through the week of December 12th).

Lectures are supposed to appear online each week, and I’m told they’ll also be downloadable. I will try to download the videos ahead of time and have copies of them locally. Other than that, we’re just going to play things by ear – I’ve never done a course like this before, perhaps because no course I’m aware of has been done like this before. Something you can program on (i.e. a computer)  might be helpful to have. Quoth their website, “Programming is not required, however we believe it will be very helpful for some of the homework assignments. You may write code in any language you would like to (we recommend Python if you are new to programming) and your code will not be graded.” A textbook is not required but is supposedly helpful, and I think some people said they had older editions they could bring in.

If you’re taking the course, or you want to take it, please join us. You don’t need to be a Hive13 member. You don’t even need to be enrolled in the online course, for that matter – but it’s free and enrollment is open until October 9th, so you may as well.

While feedback on the first run of the RE102 class comes in, I wanted to let people know that we will be offering a second run of the class.  Based on comments both on and off the site, it seems like we will have another full class.  I haven’t finalized on a date yet as I want to update the class a bit based on feedback from the first set of attendees; but the date will be decided and posted soon.  So here are some ways you can stay updated to catch the class announcement and register before it fills up:

1. Follow @hive13 on Twitter
2. Add the Hive13 RSS feed to your reader
3. Use the Reload Every plugin and never take your eyes off the site (not recommended)

I can tentatively say that we are shooting for some time in March, but more details will come in the future.  Hope to see you there :)

“This is outright theft of the hacklab.to “Python Newbie Night” event. One night a week (Wed. @7pm) we get together with electronic copies of “think python”, talk about a chapter, then write some code. We may skip around depending on the skill levels of those who are present. If the class format takes off we can do other languages as well (say java and C++). I would like to invite non-coders and non-members to the class, so tell your friends and relatives!” -ChrisA

So this Wednesday, September 9, 2009, we are having our first Python learning night at the Hive.  Bring yourself, a laptop and a friend.

After the meeting Craig will be giving a quick tutorial on how to use Blender to make objects we can print with the makerbot.  Bring your laptop with Blender installed if you wish to participate.
