SMT Hand soldering 101

February 10th, 2011 1 comment

We will be hosting a SMT Hand soldering class at the Hive on Wednesday March 2nd at 7pm.  Goal for the class is to cover simple, easy to do (with a steady hand) techniques and materials used for soldering common SMT packages WITH
LEADS.  NO BGA.  NO QFN.  (i.e. nothing with “blind” pads underneath the device that need soldered – can’t do that well without reflow IMHO)

Targets:
SOIC
TQFP
resistors, capacitors down to 0402 (I’m not good enough to do 0201 by hand consistently)
connectors (mini USB, ethernet, etc.)

This covers 90% of the MCUs, transitors/FETs and passive components commonly used by enthusiasts.  We will most likely be building AMP kits that you will be able to take home after the class.  Seats are extremely limited for this class but if it sells out we plan on having this class again.

Date: 3/2/2011  Time: 7pm-9pm

Android Dev 101 Sold Out

December 5th, 2010 Comments off

Android Development 101 class has been sold out.  I’ve had some requests to be put on a backup list if anybody drops out of class.  Eventbrite will probably show an opening if somebody drops out but we are currently NOT doing an official wait list.  We are however going to have another android development class sometime early 2011 for those who can not attend this class.  We know the class size is small but we feel that this is a good thing…we just need to have more classes :)

For those who are going to be attending this class, emails will go out as we get closer the the date of the class.  Teaser:  You will be making an app that you can use while drunk to assist in drunk txting your friends … hehe

Android 101 Development Class

November 29th, 2010 2 comments

Learn how to program your own custom applications for Android devices.  This class will go through the quick and easy method using Google’s AppInventor then go into details on how to use Eclipse to design more complicated applications.  This class will mainly focus on creating GUIs, Activities, Intents and callbacks as well as AlertBuilder.  We will also discuss how to run your application in an emulator and directly on your device.

You will want to have Eclipse installed with the android tools ahead of time.  See http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing.html (Get the Java or RDP version of Eclipse)  If you are having problems getting this installed then Craig will be there at 6 to help but class will start promptly at 7pm.

December 16th, 7pm at Hive13 Hackerspace

Class cost is $20  (Members $10)  Member codes will go out in email.

Limited Seating. We will accept money at the door if seats are still available.

New Membership Tiers!

November 24th, 2010 Comments off

New Membership TiersAt the Hive we are really excited to announce new membership tiers!  We are now offering $50 a month for FULL membership to new members.  This is the same level of access as our old $100 tier, which gives you a door code, 24/7 access to the space, lockers, discounts on classes and the admiration of your peers!

We are having a membership drive to get 15 new members.  This number is important because with 15 new members we can ensure that the overall membership to the space can be lowered to $50/mo for good and still pay our rent!  There is also a little red meter under the subscribe  button on the main page so everybody can follow along on the progress of the drive.

To become a full member goto the main page at www.hive13.org and click “Subscribe” on the right hand side.

A little lower down the the sidebar is another new tier called the Elite tier.  This is a donation tier.  If you can’t make it to the Hive but you still want to support us, then this is the tier for you!  Members will also get discounts on upcoming classes at the hive!  If you are a full time student then you can sign up for the Elite tier, fill out the student application (still to come) and you can be a full member as well!

Please spread this message around.  We need to make this membership drive a success!
