HIVE13 Brew Crew Brewout this Saturday, July 13 from 12:00 noon to 5:00pm

July 11th, 2013 Comments off
This Saturday, July 13th, married members Michael and (recent Bock Fest Moerlein Special Release award-winning brewer) Tiffany Bell-Horwath will host an all-grain brewout at the HIVE! Plans include brewing a 10 gallon batch of a brown ale (a clone of the beer moosedrool if anyone has had it).
You are invited to join the Brew Crew at HIVE13 to learn and share brewing skills.  The event will get started around noon, and it will likely go till around 5:00pm.  Feel free to stop in at any point.
Active brewers are encouraged to bring some homebrew for folks to sample and enjoy.  So far, this will include a  bourbon barrel aged vanilla been Russian imperial stout and a cream ale.  With some interest, a root beer could be made and available on tap as well.  At some point we may all chip-in to order a pizza or something of that nature.  Bonus points will be awarded to those who bring some pot-luck munchies to share.
All who are interested in brewing are welcome.  Consider to bring your setup and equipment for the show-and-tell.  Bring your dreams and schemes and make plans to implement the makers’ beer garden show-and-tell at the upcoming Cincinnati mini-maker faire to be in Washington Park on October 19.
We are looking forward to this brewday and hope to see you there!  (Find Us)

Tuesday May 14, 2013 at Hive13 – DIY CSI Forensics

April 28th, 2013 Comments off

Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, May 14, at the 7:30 pm meeting for an informative look into Do-It-Yourself Crime-Scene-Investigation Forensics.

Member Brian Cochran (who is a Detective in the Boone County Sheriff’s Department assigned to crime scene investigation) will use material from the 40-hour course he teaches at the University of Tennessee’s National Forensic Academy.  Brian will perform live demonstrations of some of the coolest latent print development techniques; making finger prints appear on paper,  making them glow, and fun stuff like that.  The presentation will include a brief overview with slides showing real CSI jobs and case studies.  The case studies focus on the processes that are used and where the “maker” attitude was applied to bring the case to a successful conclusion.  The two case studies that will be presented are homicides.  Real crime scene photography and a limited number of postmortem examination photos will be shown.  It will not be anything different from what you would see on an episode of CSI or Dexter but these ARE real.  Both of these case study presentations have been shown to high school groups before, but this is an UP FRONT WARNING for those inclined to be squeamish.

Members, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and those interested in law enforcement and criminal investigations are welcome to come to hear this presentation.  Come to learn about this different kind of  (“making” the case) skill.  (Find Us)

Urban Survival: Zombie Outbreak Cincinnati

September 25th, 2012 Comments off

Is it better to be unprepared for the expected, or prepared for the unexpected? As cities around the world brace for the end of times, perhaps they should just be making plans. Urban survival is as much about knowing your terrain as it is knowing your enemy. Where will you run when hordes of the undead attack? How will you communicate when smart phones become as dead as your antagonist? More importantly, what IS Cincinnati chili made of exactly, and is it enough to help sustain life?

All of these questions and more will be address in Urban Survival: Zombie Outbreak Cincinnati, where we explore the design of a city with extreme prejudice.

When: Oct. 9th 7:30pm

Where: Hive13 (2929 SpringGrove Ave)

Speaker: Giacomo Ciminello

International Day Against DRM — May 4, 2012

April 27th, 2012 Comments off

On May 4th Hive13 together with 2600 will take part in International Day Against DRM.  On May 4th you are encouraged to spread word about the harms of DRM.  On Friday we will discuss how harmful DRM is as well as give demonstrations on how to liberate some of your digital goods from the DRM shackles.  We plan to focus primarily on ebooks just to keep the demos reasonably small.  If you have any experience with removing certain types of ebook protections please bring any tools or techniques with you for open discussion.  At this time we already have some volunteers that will demonstrate the remove of DRM for Adobe’s DRM plus I personally have a collection of scripts for: Mobipocket (.prc/.mobi), Kindle Mobipocket (.azw), Kindle Topaz (.tpz/.azw1), Kindle Print Replica (.azw4), Adobe ePub (.epub), Adobe PDF (.pdf), B&N ePub (.epub), B&N/Fictionwise eReader (.pdb).

Cinci 2600 starts at 7pm on May 4th

Free and open to the public!

More info: Day against DRM

If you want to volunteer for demos you can use the mailing list or our g+ page.
