April 19th, 2014 No comments

Join us at Hive13 on Tuesday, May 13, at 7:30pm for Ham Radio Night. We will be welcoming Gary Coffey, Jerry Shipp, and perhaps others from the OH-KY-IN Amateur Radio Society as our May “Second-Tuesday-of-the-Month” guest speakers.

Amateur Radio is a valuable volunteer emergency communications service and public resource. Hear about the latest kit building and DIY developments in the field of radio art. Learn about upcoming events within the local amateur radio community; including ARRL certification and licensing opportunities. After the big one, these Ham Radio enthusiasts with access to a 12V car battery may be the only ones still on the air and communicating.

Members, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and those interested in learning more about the world of ham radio are welcome to come to our meeting and this presentation, Tuesday, May 13, at 7:30pm. (Find Us)

Tuesday April 8, 2014 at Hive13 – DIY as a way of life – Just Do It!

March 26th, 2014 No comments

Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, April 8, at 7:30pm for an enlightened look into hardcore DIY as way of life. We will be welcoming Robert Inhuman from local electronic punk group Decide Today and Divtech as our “Second-Tuesday-of-the-Month” guest speaker for April.

Do-It-Yourself can be more than just a resourceful activity. DIY can be a life philosophy that affects every aspect of your survival and all of the accessories in your existence. Hear and discuss Robert’s challenging views on the importance of asserting authority over one’s own existence.

Robert is plugged into several local projects, such as the Cincinnati DIY calendar, Soapbox infoshop, etc. These media promote a gathering of all local events and resources focused on “Do-It-Yourself”. These events include arts and music, social activism, politics, food, clothing, transportation, homes, technology, and any kind of how-to’s that are available without exclusivity in our community.

Tuesday January 14, 2014 at Hive13 – DIY BioSci

January 12th, 2014 1 comment

Join us at Hive13 this Tuesday, January 14, when our regular 2nd Tuesday of the month guest speaker program will resume for the new year, immediately following the brief 7:30 pm general meeting.

Member Mike Horwarth (who is a UC PhD stident) will share a brief (30 minute) presentation on Hacking Genes:  Synthetic Biology and DIY-Science.

Modern Biology has taken us from the double helix to genetic engineering and personal genomics.  Biotech is now on the cusp of the synthetic biology revolution, promising to create radically new organisms using machine-written DNA.  Citizen scientists are starting to explore these techniques, hacking genes in garage labs and bio-makerspaces.  At the same time public unease with genetic modification is growing.  Who will control this technology, and how will the DIY-Biology movement evolve?  Mike will talk about the basics of synthetic biology, current projects in the DIY-Bio community, and ideas for DIY-Bio at Hive13.

Members, guests, first-time-walk-ins, and those interested in learning more about this organic branch of hacking are welcome to come to the meeting and this presentation.  (Find Us)
